Just this week, Links Magazine has featured Old Head on its cover as “The Most Spectacular Golf Course on the Planet” - ranked in front of such notables as Cypress Point (#2), Pebble Beach (#5) and Pinnacle Point (#8) - thus giving testimony to the prophesy made by Joe Carr (3-times British Amateur Champion and Captain of the R & A) in the late 1980’s when he first laid eyes on this special place...
He told the owner brothers, John and Patrick O’Connor that the golf course had the potential to become the “Eight Wonder of the golfing World”.
In July 1999, a very famous “six-ball” turned up to play on the new course that had the golf world talking. The “six-ball” in question was made up of multiple Major winners - the late Payne Stewart, Tiger Woods, Mark O’Meara, Lee Jansen, Stewart Appleby and David Duval.
They enthused about the whole experience - the antiquity of the site, the stunning 360º vista of cliffs and ocean, the abundance of flora and fauna - and they predicted that one day the Old Head would become a golfing Mecca and a “must play” destination for all discerning golfers from around the world.
They were right!!
Since that far-off day in 1999, the O’Connor’s have continued to pour energy and resources into the venture. In 2008, 15 luxury suites and a spa were added to the property and year after year ongoing enhancements are made to the golf course.
Old Heads neighbouring town of Kinsale is known as the gourmet capital of Ireland. The town is just thirty minutes from Cork airport and within reach of all the famous Links courses of the South West of Ireland, namely, Ballybunion, Lahinche, Tralee and Waterville to name a few.
Old Head currently has an International membership of over 350 from all five continents and in addition to members’ play; a limited amount of outside play is invited each day.
Come visit us and experience this ‘must play’ course for yourself.
