Machrihanish Dunes and Southworth Development wish to extend each and every one our sincere appreciation for your support during our first few months of operation. Since the official Grand Opening back in July of 2009, we have received an overwhelming response from golfers world-wide. International golf journalists who visited the new course quickly labeled it “the next great golf experience,” and “the world’s most natural golf course” and the course has since graced the covers of five golf publications. The excitement continues to grow!
But we’re not resting on our laurels. Beginning in January, we began work on several course enhancements, each designed to render Machrihanish Dunes even more enjoyable and memorable. We have worked closely with Scottish National Heritage and our environmental consultants on these modifications and thank them for their assistance in helping us take this great course to the next level. What changes do we have planned? Specifically, the course’s 8th green will be moved 40-50 yards closer to the fairway, shortening the hole and reducing the carry required to reach the green. That change will also allow the location of the second tee to be shifted inland, a point from which the fairway will be more visible from the tee. (This will also provide a vantage point that offers stunning views of the ocean from the 2nd tee, something golfers are sure to enjoy – especially so early in the round!) The 9th fairway will also be widened a bit, which will make the tee shot there less demanding and the approach shot to the green more straightforward. A large, hidden bunker that made the second shot on the par-5 17th hole overly challenging will also be removed. Finally, work will also be done to reduce the severity of specific areas of the secondary rough. These changes will obviously result in some interruptions in play, but in order to complete the work with the least impact on course availability possible, Southworth has decided to keep 9 holes open for play during the enhancements. Work will conclude by the end of March.
At Southworth Development, we are always striving for ways to improve our guest experience and will continue to seek ways to enhance it. We look forward to a spectacular 2010 season, exceeding all your expectations and providing memorable golf experiences for everyone who visits Machrihanish Dunes!
